My Philosophy

My approach to counseling is largely integrative, which means I consider what brings you to counseling and adjust my approach based on what is likely to be most effective. This necessitates that I first listen well and learn from you about what brought you to counseling so that I can effectively help you solve problems or thrive through difficult seasons. I recognize that you are the expert on your experiences and you do have the ability to be successful through them, I’m just here to support you through that.

With children, I enjoy using play and games as a way of teaching them appropriate replacement coping skills for inappropriate behaviors. With teens and young adults, talk therapy and psychoeducation is often successful. I most often use cognitive and behavioral approaches to help with mood concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression). I also enjoy helping parents fill their toolbox with a variety of tools to help them raise their children through both parent training and psychoeducation. I recognize that changing patterns of behavior is often not easy, so when working with parents, I use an “I do, we do, you do” approach that allows parents to learn and grow in their positive interactions with their children.

Prior to coming to Oakwood, I worked as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP) in Bryan ISD serving students from Pre-K through 6th grade. As part of this position, I conducted special education evaluations for students with Autism, ADHD, and Emotional Disturbance. I collaborated with parents and teachers to create an environment most beneficial to the student and I provided related service counseling to students in special education. I also was involved in ARD meetings and helped provide recommendations for struggling general education students. Prior to my time in Bryan ISD, I was a pre-doctoral intern at Cypress Fairbanks ISD near Houston. I received my master’s and doctoral training at Texas A&M University and enjoy living in BCS and giving back to this community.
