Dyslexia Therapy

Dyslexia Therapist vs. Dyslexia Specialist

A Dyslexia therapist is not the same as a Dyslexia tutor or specialist. Therapists are required to complete an accredited multisensory language training program, consisting of 200 hours of coursework, 700 hours of supervised clinical experience, and 10 demonstration lessons in multisensory structured language education. Upon completing the training program, a licensed Dyslexia therapist candidate must pass the Academic Language Therapy Association Competency Exam. The final step of licensure is to apply for a Dyslexia Therapy License through the state of Texas. This license is only eligible for individuals who also hold a master’s degree. A Dyslexia therapist goes through extensive training and hands-on experience before they obtain a license.

About Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that makes it difficult for a person to identify, read, and process the information (letters or words) they see or hear. It is a lifelong condition but can be helped with guidance from an experienced dyslexia therapist

Not all individuals with dyslexia experience the same challenges. Dyslexia is caused by a variance in how brains process languages and occurs across a spectrum. Some individuals experience severe challenges with reading and writing, while others may not face that same level of difficulty. Dyslexia is not caused by inadequate intelligence, problems with hearing or vision, or lack of effort.

Dyslexia can not only have a significant impact on academic performance, but also on self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being. Thus, it is important to seek professional help from a qualified therapist near you as early as possible.
